New Immunization Law Compendium Will Provide Public Health Practitioners, Advocates, and Policymakers with Searchable Database of Law and Regulations Related to Immunization

The American Public Health Association (APHA) and Epstein Becker Green announced the upcoming launch of The Legal Epidemiology of U.S. Immunization Law, a comprehensive project to assess and document state-level immunization law across the United States.

As state laws and policies governing immunization access grow more fragmented, the goal of this initiative is to give public health practitioners, advocacy groups, and other vaccine stakeholders a current picture of what the law requires in every state. That information is the foundation for sound policy and advocacy decisions, from drafting new legislation to identifying where state law creates unnecessary barriers to access.

“To protect our health, we need improved access to vaccines. This project will provide a roadmap to understanding the impact of state laws and policies on immunization and help identify opportunities to improve access in communities,” said Georges C. Benjamin, MD, CEO of APHA. “This new resource will be another powerful tool for decisionmakers as they work to improve community health.”

Funded by an anonymous grant to APHA, the project will create a publicly accessible, user-friendly website, The Immunization Law Compendium. This website will feature a database with searchable functionality, interactive visual design features, statutory and regulatory summaries for all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and direct links to source legislation. The Immunization Law Compendium will include information, including school entry requirements, exemptions, Medicaid and commercial insurance coverage, professional scope of practice, and more. The website is expected to launch in January 2027.

“Our goal is to conduct a comprehensive and rigorous assessment of state laws that facilitate or hinder access to vaccines in the United States,” said Richard Hughes IV, Member of the Firm at Epstein Becker Green and law faculty at Georgetown University and George Washington University.

The project represents a commitment to ensuring that resources are available to help inform vaccine access and policy across the nation.
