Washington, DC (June 7, 2021) – Epstein Becker Green (“EBG”) is pleased to announce the arrival of Sarah M. Hall, a white collar defense attorney and former prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”), Criminal Division. She joins EBG from Thompson Hine as a Member of the Firm in the Health Care & Life Sciences practice.
Sarah represents companies and individuals in criminal and civil health care enforcement matters, including False Claims Act and state Attorney General investigations. She draws on her government experience to offer clients valuable, firsthand insights into how prosecutors and law enforcement agents think, investigate, and try cases. She vigorously advocates for her client’s interests with the goal of persuading law enforcement agencies to decline to pursue criminal charges or other enforcement actions. While many of her most important successes for clients are resolved behind the scenes and are intentionally not publicized, Sarah is well equipped to take a federal criminal case to trial where appropriate.
Additionally, Sarah regularly leads sensitive corporate internal investigations into allegations of financial fraud, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations, export control violations, narcotics in a corporate setting, #MeToo sexual harassment, and whistleblower retaliation. She is frequently sought out by clients for her skills in civil litigation, including high-stakes and emergency matters, such as temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions.
Sarah served for seven years with the Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Fraud Section as a white collar crime prosecutor. In the Securities and Financial Fraud Unit (now known as the Market Integrity and Major Frauds Unit, or MIMF) she investigated and prosecuted some of the most complex financial crimes on Wall Street. Her primary focus was the investigation and prosecution of major global financial institutions, executives, and financial traders. Sarah also served as a prosecutor on the highly successful nationwide Medicare Fraud Strike Force and has significant experience prosecuting criminal health care fraud, money laundering, and kickback offenses.
“We are excited to welcome Sarah to our stellar team of government investigations, health care fraud, and litigation attorneys,” said Mark Lutes, Chair of EBG’s Board of Directors. “Sarah’s direct experience in the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division will be a tremendous asset to our clients, especially as the number of strike force locations has steadily expanded across the United States.”
“Throughout the pandemic, DOJ has rigorously investigated heightened criminal and civil COVID-19-related fraud,” said George B. Breen, Chair of the firm’s National Health Care & Life Sciences Steering Committee. “Adding highly skilled and experienced attorneys such as Sarah helps us more fully support our clients as we expect enforcement activity to continue at a robust and aggressive pace.”
“I’m thrilled to be joining Epstein Becker Green’s highly regarded platform at such a critical time for our clients,” said Sarah. “The current administration is looking to put COVID-19 in the rearview mirror and will do so by ramping up investigative activities like knock and talks and resuming normal operations for grand juries and trials.”
Before her government service as a DOJ prosecutor, Sarah worked for international law firms defending individuals and corporations in high-profile federal white collar criminal matters, parallel civil and regulatory investigations, and complex civil litigation. Her practice focused on securities and financial fraud, accounting improprieties, and corporate internal investigations.
Prior to her legal career, Sarah worked on Capitol Hill for a U.S. senator and a U.S. representative on Finance and Appropriations Committee matters.
