Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL (January 16, 2018) – Epstein Becker Green (EBG) is pleased to announce the addition of Kathleen Premo in the Tampa / St. Petersburg area of Florida. For more than 20 years, Ms. Premo has served as a legal advisor and executive for a diverse range of health care organizations and their C-suite and senior leaders. These organizations have turned to Ms. Premo for her combined operational and legal experience and for assistance with projects such as mergers and acquisitions, strategic business development initiatives, contracting, business restructuring, and employment matters. She has stepped in to serve as General Counsel for many of her health care clients, providing collaborative legal services to busy entrepreneurs or in-house counsel facing a significant project or staffing shortages.
“Kathleen is a creative and practical business advisor with deep industry knowledge, particularly among risk-bearing provider organizations,” said Mark Lutes, Chair of EBG. “Clients will benefit from the powerful team that comes from combining Kathleen’s experience with the insights from our attorneys in Washington, DC and Baltimore, the home of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Florida is the country’s third largest state by population creating exciting opportunities for the firm’s two primary practice areas, health care and labor and employment.”
Ms. Premo’s career in the health care industry has included working as in-house counsel with physician practices on Medicare Advantage and commercial risk, hospital systems, pharmacies and hospice providers. Prior to forming her solo practice, Ms. Premo served as the General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer for JSA Healthcare Corporation, the Southeast division of DaVita Medical Group. In this role, Ms. Premo served as the lead attorney for Florida and Georgia provider and third-party payor contracting, including risk-sharing arrangements, forms of pay-for-performance, accountable care organization structures, collaborative care arrangements, and network contracting. She managed all of the company’s litigation matters and was instrumental in building its contracting and risk management programs.
Florida has seen an uptick in private equity investment within the health care industry. Therefore, over the past several years, Ms. Premo has focused much of her practice on acquisitions and divestitures representing sellers and purchasers, market consolidations, and the sale and/or transformation of significant medical groups. Prior to her role at JSA, Ms. Premo served as employment and regulatory counsel for Shriners Hospitals and as Corporate Integrity Agreement compliance, licensing, and government reimbursement counsel for Eckerd Drug Stores.
“A professional with Kathleen’s Medicare Advantage experience will be important for clients dealing with the expansion of Medicare Advantage programs throughout Florida,” said George B. Breen, Chair of EBG’s National Health Care & Life Sciences Practice Steering Committee. “Also, the Tampa Bay area has become an innovation hub and is home to many manufacturers of medical devices and life sciences companies that will benefit from EBG’s active FDA practice in Washington.”
“Joining Epstein Becker Green is a win-win-win for my clients, the firm, and my own professional goals,” said Ms. Premo. “The added resources and bench strength from the firm add capacity and connections that my clients will benefit from tremendously. In addition, my prior in-house experience and deep healthcare business experience, along with my Florida network, will add further depth to the firm’s capabilities. And finally, the firm’s national platform provides a wonderful opportunity for me to grow professionally, and I look forward to benefiting from the firm’s entrepreneurial culture and contributing to its thought leadership, innovation, and continued success.”
