James Oh, Alaap Shah, Catherine Kang, and Tammy Tran speak at the 2023 National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) Convention, which runs from November 9 to 12.
On Friday, November 10, Jimmy, Catherine, and Tammy co-present "How Far You’ll Go: Navigating the Beginning of Practice for the Big Picture of Your Career," at 2:05 p.m. Other panelists include Daphne Chen Matthews (Executive Director, Mizuho Americas) and Peggy Kuo (U.S. Magistrate Judge, U.S. District Court - EDNY). Session description:
How do you get and make the most of that first job? How do you create job security? How do you find a niche or specialization that will make for a rewarding career in the law? How do you figure out what a meaningful career looks like to you?
This panel’s goal is to provide law students and young lawyers with tools, strategies, and guidance for making the most out of their first few years in practice and building a strong foundation for a career in the law.
Attendees will receive insights from panelists about how their respective careers started and how they curated their own legal careers to arrive at the point where they are now. The ultimate goal of this panel is to provide attendees with ideas as to how they can start their legal careers off on a strong foot.
On Saturday, November 11, Alaap co-presents "A.I. and the Legal Profession: Empowering, Enhancing, Endangering? Or Simply Evolving?" at 9:15 a.m. Other panelists include Jason Kwon (Chief Strategy Officer, OpenAI), Eric Ow (Senior Counsel, Amazon), James Wang (Product Counsel, Google), and Rachel See (Senior Counsel, Seyfarth Shaw). Session description:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already pervasive in our everyday lives and in various industries, from health care to transportation to manufacturing, to name just a few.
On one hand, AI promises to improve the way our clients create and deliver their products to the market and the way lawyers advise clients and litigate matters. On the other hand, AI creates new ethical, legal and practical issues that lawyers ought to be aware of and understand.
One thing is certain: AI is transforming the practice of law, from legal research and document review, to drafting contracts, briefs and estate planning documents. But, will AI be able to help select a jury? Will it be ethical and lawful to file a brief in federal court solely “written” by AI? What can and should lawyers do to protect the integrity of the profession while harnessing the power and promise of AI?
This panel discussion introduces the perspectives of several industry and legal experts who remain at the forefront of the AI technological revolution, and aims to provide insight to practitioners regarding the advantages and limitations of utilizing AI in the practice of law.
