Los Angeles, CA (March 4, 2025)Epstein Becker Green (EBG) is pleased to announce that a case tried by Members of the Firm Michael S. Kun and Benjamin T. Runge and Associate Catherine Kang has been named among “2024’s Top Verdicts” by Daily Journal. These attorneys, who practice in EBG’s Los Angeles office, were recognized for their complete defense verdict on behalf of EBG client Aerotek following a two-week jury trial in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Diego on pregnancy discrimination and defamation claims.

Daily Journal notes that its annual list comprises California’s top verdicts by dollar, impact, defensive victories, and appellate results. The case included in this year’s list is Mayfield v. Aerotek, Inc. et al.

“We are fortunate to have a creative and efficient team able to obtain positive results for our clients not just through discovery and motions practice but also by trying cases where warranted,” said Kun, an employment litigator and trial lawyer who also serves as co-chair of EBG’s Wage and Hour practice group. “I don’t believe I have ever enjoyed trying a case as much as this one with Ben and Catherine. And it was a pleasure to deliver this result for Aerotek, a wonderful client that we have been honored to work with for many years.”

At trial, the plaintiff asked the jury for $1 million in alleged lost wages, $9 million for alleged emotional distress, and $24 million in punitive damages. The trial raised several unusual issues, and the EBG team was able to obtain a jury instruction that the plaintiff and her counsel had concealed evidence during discovery.

“This was a hard-earned victory for our clients and our team,” Runge noted, “including our colleagues who wrote some pocket briefs behind the scenes and our support staff who worked long hours with us.”

The Mayfield case was also integral to the selection of EBG’s Employment, Labor & Workforce Management practice as a 2024 Law360 “Employment Group of the Year.”
