Jeffrey H. Ruzal, senior counsel at Epstein Becker & Green PC, said the fact that the incoming Congress may not move to increase the federal minimum wage might be the impetus for more states to pursue similar ballot measures of their own.

“I tend to think in light of yesterday’s election that we’re going to see a distinct increase in the number of [local] ordinances because states and municipalities realize they can’t rely on the federal government to provide that sort of protection,” Ruzal said. “Across the country, whether red or blue, it’s a movement that will be more and more difficult for employers to ignore.”
