Learn more about Diversity at Epstein Becker GreenI knew from a young age that I wanted to be an attorney and to practice in the health care field. Along with raising five daughters, my parents also owned a health care business. My sisters and I grew up working alongside our parents in their business. One day, my parents said to me that the health care industry was going to need lawyers to keep up with the changes in health care; since I liked to read and write, they thought I would make a good health care lawyer. And, just like that, my parents had planted the seed—that is when I decided to become a health care attorney. I studied health economics in college and chose The George Washington University Law School because, at the time, it actually offered two health care classes that other law schools did not.

While I was in law school, I wrote a paper on HMOs and was looking for lawyers to interview. There was an article in the National Journal that profiled boutique law firms, and it featured Steven Epstein and Epstein Becker Green. I had a friend who knew Steven Epstein and Bill Kopit, and she introduced us. After meeting them, I knew that I wanted to work at Epstein Becker Green upon finishing law school. I joined the firm in September 1979.

I have spent my entire legal career at Epstein Becker Green. Each year, I reflect to determine if this firm is where I still want to be and if this is how I still want to spend my days. And I am pleased to say that the answers have always been “yes.” The people and the culture at Epstein Becker Green are really special in terms of collaboration, mutual respect, and providing the resources to grow your business.

As a woman, when you are looking for a place to start your career, you should consider how many women are already in leadership positions in that firm or organization. Additionally, you should look for a firm or an organization where the men are just as passionate about diversity as the women.

When I started at Epstein Becker Green, it was a very small firm, and there were no women in senior management. A lot of very good men had to be willing to advance me as a woman. I know that I could not have found better champions for embracing and promoting women initiatives than at Epstein Becker Green.
