Washington, DC (April 28, 2025) – Epstein Becker Green (EBG) is pleased to announce that Julia Feder was awarded the Robert D. Reif Fellowship in Legal Ethics and Professional Values (Fellowship) at a reception held on April 23, 2025.
After a review of essays submitted on topics involving legal ethics and professional values, four finalists were interviewed. Julia was chosen by the Selection Committee to receive this year’s Fellowship award of $5,000 for her paper, titled “Between a Bot and a Hard Place: Confidentiality and the AI Legal Landscape,” which warns that using AI systems with confidential client information risks breaches and violations of confidentiality under Rule 1.6 of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. It advises lawyers to adopt robust security and understand AI systems and advocates for appropriate regulatory or legislative oversight.
The Selection Committee would also like to acknowledge and congratulate the other finalists, Anna-Maria Nuryasin, whose paper was titled “Breaking the Connection: The Impact on the Telecommunications Industry in the Wake of the DEI Executive Order;” Victoria Paul, whose paper was titled “Cogs in a System of Legal Positivism: The Price of ‘Just Following Orders’ and Lessons from the Holocaust;” and Jordan Stevenson, whose paper was titled “Killing Kindness: How Law School Honor Codes Miss the Mark on Moral Character.”
EBG created the Fellowship in 2012 with the assistance of American University Washington College of Law. The mission of the Fellowship is to honor the memory of EBG’s longtime partner, Bob Reif, by furthering his commitment in the practice of law to maintaining the highest level of ethical standards and professionalism in dealing with clients, fellow attorneys, and the community.
We would like to extend a special thank you to this year’s Selection Committee: Susan Carle, Professor of Law, American University Washington College of Law; Jim Flynn, Member of the Firm, EBG; Doug Hastings; Corrine Parver, Retired, Founder of the Health Law and Policy Project, Program on Law and Government, American University Washington College of Law; Amy Reif; William Snape, Assistant Dean of Adjunct Faculty Affairs, American University Washington College of Law; Alan Wasserman, M.D., Chairman, Department of Medicine, George Washington University; and Kathy Williams, Member of the Firm, EBG.
