Nashville, TN (January 6, 2025) – Epstein Becker Green (EBG) is pleased to announce two key additions to the Health Care and Life Sciences practice: Tom Jaworski, the former Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, and Lisa Diehl Vandecaveye, the former Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer (CLO) of The Joint Commission. Jaworski joins the firm’s Nashville office as a Member of the Firm, while Vandecaveye joins as Of Counsel. Both join a practice that is considered among The Elite by Chambers and Partners.
“With Tom and Lisa, we have gained an incredible amount of practical experience and records of proven success—at the highest levels of the public and private sectors,” said Amy Dow, Co-Chair of EBG’s national Health Care and Life Sciences Steering Committee. “We know that clients greatly value the insider knowledge one accumulates from years serving in leadership positions at institutions focused on improving health care. We’re pleased to further elevate our platform with these two seasoned attorneys who bring immense litigation and regulatory skill sets.”
As Acting U.S. Attorney, Jaworski served as the chief legal enforcement officer, where he directed high-profile litigation matters. In a region known for its immense health care footprint, Jaworski led litigation strategies for numerous significant health care fraud cases addressing waste and abuse in the health care system. Joining a deep bench of health regulatory and litigation lawyers, including former federal prosecutors and experienced defense counsel who have built their practices at EBG, Jaworski also brings experience as a trial attorney with the Fraud Section of the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ’s) Criminal Division in Washington, DC, where he investigated and prosecuted health care fraud, kickback crimes, and money laundering.
Vandecaveye draws on more than 35 years of experience as a CLO and health care executive, during which she advised health care clients on the corporate and regulatory issues affecting their operations. At EBG, she will deliver business-focused general counsel services, guiding health care clients through strategic growth and development, governance, regulatory compliance, leadership transitions, licensing, insurance, and risk management best practices. She also advises on operational and HIPAA compliance matters, as well as medical staff, credentialing, peer review, and quality improvement issues.
“Joining EBG is the ideal step forward in my professional journey, particularly given the firm's focus on health care law and litigation,” said Jaworski. “I am eager to take my experience handling complex health care litigation and trial matters to a team known for consistently delivering solutions in high-stakes cases involving regulatory compliance, reimbursement disputes, and fraud and abuse allegations."
“The district Tom served is known to be one vitally connected to the nation’s premier health care region,” said George Breen, Co-Chair of EBG’s national Health Care and Life Sciences Steering Committee. “Tom’s deep connection to the industry and city of Nashville will prove to be of significant benefit for our clients who desire an impressive background in government enforcement and deep experience in matters of health care compliance and litigation.”
“Lisa has been at the forefront of innovative health care compliance strategies for decades, notably with significant experience at the legal helm of one of the country’s prime accreditation institutions,” said David Matyas, Member of the Firm in the Health Care and Life Sciences practice and member of EBG’s Board of Directors. “This, combined with the skills gained from her time in-house at large hospitals and hospital systems, makes her invaluable to clients in need of corporate and regulatory guidance.”
“EBG is a pioneering health care-focused law firm with a storied career advising some of the most innovative institutions,” said Vandecaveye. “I’m eager to continue developing what EBG has built over the past five decades and expand the first-rate services the firm offers.”
Jaworski has been recognized for his legal and public service, being awarded the Homeland Security Investigations Award, the Department of the Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service, and multiple DOJ Performance Awards.
Vandecaveye is a frequent speaker and author on topics related to health care and an active member of the American Health Law Association (AHLA). She serves in multiple leadership roles at AHLA, including being a member of its Board of Directors and an AHLA Fellow.
