TOPICS INCLUDE:

Political and Social Activism in the Retail Workplace: We’ll discuss the legal framework and practical ways to answer such questions as:

  • Must I grant my employees time off to attend a political rally?
  • What can/should I do if my employees don’t report because they are attending a political rally?
  • What can/should I do if my employees violate the dress code or cell phone use policy when engaging in political activity during work hours?

Religious Accommodations: We’ll tackle the toughest religious accommodation issues facing retail employers, such as:

  • Employees’ refusal to handle goods that are not acceptable to their religion
  • Scheduling accommodations around holidays/Sabbath
  • Uniforms/work attire
  • Holiday greetings

Wage & Hour Update: We’ll discuss ways to navigate through Fair Labor Standards Act compliance challenges, such as:

  • Correctly classifying assistant store managers to avoid wage and hour misclassification claims
  • Following best practices for avoiding off-the-clock work and capturing employees’ work time performed off-site or on electronic devices
  • Properly determining whether training, e-learning, and travel time are compensable activities
