Following is an excerpt:

Epstein Becker Green has lured another employment-related practice group leader from a competing BigLaw firm to its shores, adding to its Los Angeles office Venable LLP West Coast labor and employment practice head Richard J. Frey and two team members. …

Frey, who also headed Venable’s West Coast litigation group, is the third big fish EBG has landed in the last year. He joins a list that includes former Sidley Austin LLP West Coast labor and employment practice head Jonathan Brenner and former Jackson Lewis PC national wage and hour practice leader Paul DeCamp, who helmed the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division under President George W. Bush. …

Garland said EBG aims to be a “super boutique,” offering clients a deep roster of attorneys specializing in employment law and the health care industry. Having that backup close at hand has already paid off for a client who asked for urgent help while he was otherwise occupied, Frey said.

“Since I was getting ready for trial, it would have been something I would have had to punt … instead I was able to hand the call off to my colleague [EBG board member] Adam Abrahms, and the client is already satisfied,” Frey said.

Also joining EBG from Venable are senior attorney Carlos A. Becerra and associate Robert Pepple. Frey heaped high praise on his team members, saying Becerra could be “first chair or second chair on any case I’m handling” and calling Pepple “one of the smarter young lawyers I’ve ever worked with.”
