The Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division needs a funding boost to ensure the nation’s workers are paid for time they work, witnesses told a House Appropriations subcommittee. …

Paul DeCamp, who ran the WHD under President George W. Bush, supported a boost in resources for the division.

“It’s important to recognize that the Wage and Hour Division does a lot good and with more resources, they can do more good,” said DeCamp, now an attorney with Epstein, Becker, Green.

He also told the subcommittee there are major benefits to educating employers about how to navigate the maze of wage law compliance.

“There are certainty willful violators out there where putting out all the compliance assistance information in the world isn’t going to change their behavior and for them, you need punitive, coercive enforcement,” he said. “But, for the vast majority of employers, certainly in my experience, if you give them the information and you give workers the information of what the law requires, they will want to comply because they don’t want a visit from the Department of Labor.”
