William J. Milani, head of the Firm's International Employment Law group in the New York office, was quoted on a trend among U.S. law firms to coordinate with non-US counterparts when advising international clients with issues connected with reductions in force.
The article, "For Attorneys, Rise In Global RIFs Creates New Ties," stated that amid globalization and the economic downturn, companies are cutting work forces across national borders. As a result, lawyers are collaborating to help clients navigate labor and employment laws.
Milani noted that Epstein Becker Green was actively working on dozens of reorganizations implicating cross-border reductions in force. Awareness of the mosaic of laws applicable in different jurisdictions is a key component of that work.
"We work very closely with counsel in those other countries to coordinate, and to ensure that the laws are being complied with," Milani said.
He added that the Firm has informal but close ties to carefully vetted, top-notch firms in foreign markets. "One of the things that we've been very careful to do is develop relationships with firms around the world that have employment law as a significant part of their practice," he said. "We have our 'go-to' firms in all of the major business centers around the world."
