Small hospitals have been moving patient records to the cloud or have begun using software-as-a-service (SaaS)-based EHRs as a way to mitigate the costs of cybersecurity and infrastructure, Robert Hudock, a health-care attorney with Epstein Becker & Green, PC in Washington, told Bloomberg BNA Sept. 8.
SaaS offers hospitals a way to license software that is hosted on remote servers, sparing hospitals the cost of purchasing the software.
While some small hospitals can reduce their costs by transferring patient records to the cloud, for many that step won’t adequately address either their cybersecurity costs or other financial pressures, likely leading them to consider a consolidation, a merger, a collaboration with another hospitals, or closure, Patricia Wagner, also a health-care attorney with Epstein Becker & Green, PC in Washington, told Bloomberg BNA Sept. 8.
