The Trump administration proposed combining the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday as one piece of a broader reorganization of federal agencies the president ordered shortly after taking office.

The plan would see the agencies merged into a single Department of Education and the Workforce, with the aim of streamlining federal oversight of the school to work pipeline by consolidating it under one roof, the White House Office of Management and Budget said.

Epstein Becker Green attorney Paul DeCamp, who headed the DOL’s Wage and Hour Division under George W. Bush, described the plan Thursday as “an interesting approach to dealing with a government efficiency concern that’s been around for a long time.”

“We have, currently, two departments that have some measure of overlap in their functions,” DeCamp said, pointing to the Workplace Innovation and Opportunity Act, which the agencies administer together. “I think there’s probably some efficiency to be had here, but there are also certainly areas of non-overlap between what Education does and what Labor does.”
