Following is an excerpt:
Robert Morgenthau, the legendary longtime Manhattan district attorney known by former colleagues as “the boss,” died on Sunday at age 99.
Morgenthau served as Manhattan’s U.S. attorney for nearly 10 years in the 1960s before going on to become the borough’s longest-serving district attorney from 1975 to 2009. Former prosecutors who worked in Morgenthau’s office remembered him Monday for his determination to do the right thing. …
Alumni of Morgenthau’s office now work as prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges all over the country. The chance to work in the DA’s office was what lured Melissa Jampol from Chicago to New York.
Jampol was an assistant district attorney who went on to become a federal prosecutor and now practices at Epstein Becker Green. She remembers the training at the DA’s office as comprehensive, and Morgenthau’s effect on the morale of an office that handled millions of cases while he was DA.
“They always say tone at the top matters. He is the best example of that,” Jampol said. “And he set about hiring people who were really dedicated to doing the right thing and not just securing convictions.”
