New York, NY (August 11, 2023) – Epstein Becker Green (EBG) is pleased to announce that it has been named a recipient of the 2023 Innovation Award by the New York Law Journal, an honor that recognizes firms and individuals for their forward-thinking and creative approaches to the legal profession. EBG will be recognized during the New York Legal Awards on October 4 at Pier Sixty, located at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.
In its deliberations, the New York Law Journal reviewed several of EBG’s recent accomplishments, its longer-term initiatives, and its innovative history and culture—notably, the firm’s swift response to the Dobbs decision and its efforts to help employers and health care providers navigate the complicated legal patchwork related to abortion and other impacted issues, as well as its long-standing counseling on artificial intelligence (AI) and other generative technologies. Additionally, the firm’s e-learning solution for employee workplace training, Halting Harassment, also illustrated the firm’s open and adaptive attitude toward technology.
“EBG remains at the forefront of progress, and as thought leaders, we not only look forward but around corners,” said James P. Flynn, Managing Director at EBG. “For years before the surge of interest in ChatGPT and similar generative AI technologies, EBG prepared clients for the AI revolution; our dedicated Dobbs working group was in full motion before the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 24 decision; and our attorneys who were once innovating in the cannabis space are now looking to assist clients addressing psychedelic medicine.”
As EBG celebrates its 50th anniversary, the firm notes that much of its success derives from the culture of innovation imbued by its founders from its inception. Recognized as a health care law pioneer and the first “health care law firm,” EBG was grown out of a need for health care- and workforce-focused attorneys after the enactment of a wave of important legislation in the 1960s and 1970s—including the Medicare and Medicaid Act and the Equal Pay Act. That same spirit now infuses the firm’s focused workforce management, health care, and life sciences practices and drives EBG attorneys’ approach to the litigation, transactional, privacy, security, AI, regulatory, and other matters they address every day.
“This award is a testament to fruits of creative thinking and diversity—both in our makeup and our viewpoints,” said Mark E. Lutes, Chair of EBG’s Board of Directors. “As we reflect on the last 50 years, we know that our focus has and will continue to yield thought leadership.”
Other EBG innovations supporting this recognition included the firm’s ability to keep clients abreast of the latest developments through initiatives such as EBG’s Telemental Health Laws app and yearly Survey Update, the Wage & Hour Guide for Employers app, the Thought Leaders in Health Law video series, Employment Law This Week and #WorkforceWednesday (with over 300 episodes), the Diagnosing Health Care and Speaking of Litigation podcasts, EBG’s Annual Workforce Management Briefing (celebrating its 42nd year), the firm’s consultancy EBG Advisors, and EBG’s alliance with Deloitte Legal. Exemplifying its long-celebrated culture of diversity and inclusion, EBG’s Women’s Initiative was among the first to commence within law firms.
