New York, NY (November 28, 2012) — David Matyas, Member of the Firm and a veteran health care attorney with Epstein Becker Green, has been appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP), an independent, not-for-profit, accrediting body for community-based health care organizations.

Through "deeming authority" granted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), CHAP has the regulatory authority to survey agencies providing home health, hospice, and home medical equipment services, to determine if they meet the Medicare Conditions of Participation and CMS Quality Standards. CHAP's purpose is to define and advance the highest standards of community-based care. Currently, it has more than 5,000 agencies accredited nationwide.

Describing his objectives for the organization Matyas states:

"We want to ensure that health care providers are following the appropriate policies and procedures when it comes to complying with state and federal regulations as well as keeping up with industry standards. The goal of CHAP is to coach, educate, and inspire providers to achieve higher levels of performance and to continue to improve in quality when it comes to the delivery of service and care. I look forward to serving on the Board and contributing to its overall goals," said Matyas, a Member of the Firm in the Health Care and Life Sciences practice, in the Washington, D.C., office.

Matyas focuses his practice on federal and state fraud issues such as anti-kickback, self-referral, false claims, and regulatory compliance. In addition, he concentrates on legal and regulatory matters arising under Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payment programs. Matyas represents an array of health care providers including hospitals and health systems, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, academic medical centers, retail and specialty pharmacies, ambulatory surgery centers, home health agencies, and physician organizations. He also advises investors and other financial institutions that invest in or support the health care industry.

From 2005 to 2008, by appointment of the Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services, Matyas served on the Advisory Committee on Blood Safety & Availability, which provides advice on broad public health, ethical, and legal issues related to the nation's supply of blood and blood products. And, from 2002 to 2008, Matyas served as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Health Lawyers Association.
