Frank Morris, a Member of the Firm in the Litigation practice and head of the Labor and Employment Practice in the Washington, DC office was quoted in an article that discussed the benefits of furloughs versus layoffs.
In the article, "Weighing Furlough vs. Layoff: Costs, Skills Figure in How Best to Weather Recession," Morris urged clients to consider furloughs, which are often cheaper for employers than layoffs. In the short run, he said, the employer avoids paying severance costs. When business picks up, the employer also saves on recruiting and training costs for new workers.
