But exactly how the New York law will play out in practice is unclear, and lawyers say there are many lingering questions for employers.
“The city implemented these changes with respect to smaller employers on short notice, and I don’t think small employers are ready to start dealing with this in such a short timeframe,” said Mandelman, noting that the April 1 effective date is less than two weeks away.
Thursday’s amendments expanded coverage to businesses with five employees and did away with a “phase-in” period that would have delayed coverage for some.
Attorneys said Thursday they had been getting a slew of calls about the new law and how not to run afoul of it.
“This is something that employers need to pay careful attention to,” said Mandelman. “It’s more complicated to implement than it may seem on its face.”
