Telemedicine, the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients using electronic communications, has gone mainstream. Advancements in telemedicine are allowing providers to offer care that is high quality, efficient, and cost effective. However, both users and consumers of telemedicine technologies must be mindful of certain significant, though not insurmountable, legal and regulatory challenges presenting barriers to such use. As the ubiquity and sophistication of telemedicine technologies continues to progress at a rapid pace, providers and organizations considering use of telemedicine technologies also should consider implementing targeted compliance policies, procedures, and processes related to telemedicine legal regulatory requirements.
