Marylana Helou, Member of the Firm, co-presents “Key Challenges in Navigating Research Misconduct Proceedings” at the 66th Annual Meeting of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), which runs from August 3 to 7.
This session will take a deep dive into the most challenging aspects of conducting research misconduct proceedings in accordance with the PHS Policy on Research Misconduct and will explore how agency guidance in recent years has expanded the scope of institutional responsibilities concerning research misconduct proceedings. The speakers will focus on: (i) the requirement to pursue leads, (ii) how to define allegations in a world with referral sources such as PubPeer, Clare Francis, and others, (iii) the challenge of honest error/difference of opinion and when in the process that can be evaluated, and (iv) the challenge of keeping the proceedings confidential and the need to know standard. Through an engaging and interactive Q&A with the audience, the presenters will discuss best practices for each of these challenges. To the extent the Final Rule is published, the presenters will also discuss how the rule impacts these challenges.
