Following is an excerpt:
Epstein Becker Green has bolstered its Washington, D.C., presence with the addition of a new health care regulatory attorney who was most recently at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Jennifer E. Michael has made the move to Epstein Becker after serving in the HHS Office of Counsel to the Inspector General as the chief of the Industry Guidance Branch, the firm said on Thursday. Michael told Law360 on Friday she is joining Epstein Becker as a member, which is the firm’s version of a partner.
She said that the firm really stood out, and that it has a talented group of attorneys dedicated to helping her build her practice.
“I felt like this was a uniquely opportune time to move to private practice given the government’s increasing interest in and push to value-based care and I felt like I could really make a difference and contribute to improved compliance in a changing regulatory landscape,” she said.
Michael has joined the firm’s health care and life sciences practice, but is still in the midst of figuring out what exactly her practice will entail and what types of clients she’ll be working with, she said.
Generally, she said she will be working with health care clients interested in regulatory compliance on value-based care arrangements. Those type of arrangements value rewarding providers for providing the best care possible for patients, she said.
She said she will be advising her clients on such issues as reimbursement issues, as well as fraud and abuse issues.
“It’s fascinating,” she said about the health care legal world and why she enjoys the practice. “There are always new and difficult issues. The regulatory environment is constantly changing, and health care is an industry that touches everyone.”
