As all hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and other places of public accommodations should be aware, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulates certain standards for accessible design and treatment for individuals with disabilities. New ADA standards were enacted in September 2010 and took effect on March 15, 2012. These new standards set out significant changes for places of public accommodations, to make them readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities, and impose new employer responsibilities that will have immediate legal and financial effects on all hospitality and retail employers. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of cases brought by plaintiffs under the accessibility provisions of the ADA. This trend will only increase further with the promulgation of the new ADA standards, as zealous plaintiffs' attorneys bring suits on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

This interactive seminar, presented by Julie Badel, Kara Maciel, and Viktoria Lovei, will address how the new ADA standards affect the hospitality and retail industries and describe specific actions that employers should take to comply with these updated legal requirements and avoid significant financial penalties.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Reservations for accessible rooms at hotels
  • Effective communication to individuals with disabilities
  • Service animal accommodations
  • Mobility devices
  • Swimming pool, spa, and recreational facility requirements
  • The recent wave of lawsuits
  • Steps that every employer should take today

Who should attend: General Counsel, Human Resource Executives, Chief Operating Officers, and Compliance Officers in the hospitality and retail industries.
