Jennifer Gefsky, Former Vice President & Deputy General Counsel of Major League Baseball, Joins Epstein Becker Green in New York

NEW YORK – January 10, 2018 Epstein Becker Green (EBG) is pleased to announce that Jennifer Gefsky has joined the firm’s Employment, Labor & Workforce Management practice, in New York. Prior to joining EBG, Ms. Gefsky served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Major League Baseball (MLB), and she subsequently co-founded Après, a successful digital platform that connects highly educated and experienced professional women who have taken career breaks with companies seeking talent and diversity.

While in her position at MLB, Ms. Gefsky advised and counseled the Office of the Commissioner on all matters relating to MLB players and umpires, and administered the negotiations for various collective bargaining agreements for the organization. She also advised and counseled the Office of the Commissioner on employment issues concerning the individuals whom it employs, including issues relating to best employment practices; claims of discrimination based on race, sex, age, disability, and national origin; the hiring and separation of employees; disability; compensation and benefits; and other terms and conditions of employment. Ms. Gefsky also supervised MLB’s outside counsel in employment-related litigations.

Ms. Gefsky began her career as an associate at Proskauer in New York. At the age of 30, she was selected by Crain’s New York as one of the “40 Under 40 Rising Stars.” After spending time in big law and as one of MLB’s highest-ranking women executives, she took time away from the office to raise her children. When Ms. Gefsky decided to reenter the workforce, she co-founded Après with the mission of helping woman with resume gaps find work while also helping educate businesses on the value that these women bring to the workforce. Après launched with much media fanfare, and Fast Company named Après as one of the top innovations in 2016 that changed women’s lives. The platform currently has more than 120 corporate partners and 35,000 members.

“Jen brings outstanding experience and credentials to our team, and we are very fortunate to welcome her to EBG,” said David W. Garland, Chair of the firms’ National Employment, Labor & Workforce Management Steering Committee. “From being one of the top labor lawyers for Major League Baseball to creating a very successful business aimed at helping women reenter the workforce, our clients will benefit from her exceptional judgement, sharp business sense, and innovative spirit.”

“There aren’t many firms that can excel in both practice excellence and outstanding culture,” said Ms. Gefsky. “But EBG does just that—they have built a focused firm that has a strong national platform known for deep experience in labor and employment. I’m excited to join such a collegial group of attorneys, some of whom I have worked with previously.”

Ms. Gefsky currently serves as a foundation board member at Northern Westchester Hospital. She received her J.D. from University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a B.A. from Florida Atlantic University.
