Special Immigration Alert: New Form I-9

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has posted the new Form I-9 on its website (www.uscis.gov/i-9). Employers must begin using the new form for all Form I-9 verifications or re-verifications occurring on or after February 2, 2009. Previous versions of Form I-9, in English or Spanish, are no longer valid after that date. Employers still using the old forms after February 1, 2009 will be subject to applicable penalties and fines.

The revised form reduces the number of documents employers can accept to verify employment eligibility. A complete listing of these changes appears in our January 2009 Immigration Alert, which is available on our website at /publications/immigration-alert-january-2009/.
