There are a few ways of centralizing the data. An employer can purchase a software package to be used in-house, or the company can partner with a third-party vendor, according to Glasser.

"Often, the initial investment can prove cost-effective and efficient down the road," he said, noting that third-party vendors tend to have plenty of experience dealing with data collection, maintenance and reporting.

But employers will want to ensure that the third party offers just the right software, Glasser noted, because ill-fitted programs won't be worth the expense or could be insufficient and still leave an employer open to punishment for noncompliance.
