Linda Tiano Quoted in Article, “High Expectations for State Insurance Exchange”Crain's New York Business September 30, 2013
Linda Tiano, a Member of the Firm in the Health Care and Life Sciences practice, in the Washington, DC, and New York offices, was quoted in an article titled "High Expectations for State Insurance Exchange."
Following is an excerpt:
Health care advocates are expecting heavy Web traffic but slow enrollment when the state's health insurance exchange open Tuesday. ?...
The high cost of insurance in New York may lead many consumers to purchase on the exchange, said Linda Tiano, a partner at Epstein Becker & Green who specializes in health care.
"You've got a lot of people who are paying enormous amounts of money right now for individual coverage. I think those people are going to be very quick to get something new and cheaper. There are other people in New York who have looked at getting coverage and were put off by the high prices," she said.
The high level of interest combined with the huge technological undertaking is what's creating uncertainty over the system's initial performance, said Ms. Tiano.
"The big challenge is everyone connecting to different systems," she said. "Everybody's got to be able to connect the IRS, to the department of Social Services, and transmit that information directly to the carriers. None of those connections existed previously." ?...
"We've been waiting for so many years to be able to offer full-service insurance to our clients who are uninsured," she said. "People are taking appointments and we're all really excited."
