Following is an excerpt:

Standard, now general counsel emeritus at Epstein Becker & Green and of counsel in the labor and employment practice, has long been a leader in pushing to make the bar more diverse and moving the needle in his own workplace and volunteer activities.

A past state bar president, Standard drove a successful effort to promote bylaws designating seats on the bar's executive committee and House of Delegates for minority members.

The organization's corporate counsel section established a program in Standard's name that offers internships with corporate legal departments to law students from diverse backgrounds.

Mark Alcott, of counsel at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and a past state bar president, said he heard of the pipeline concept first and foremost from Standard.

"When we thought about diversity, how we make sure minority lawyers are joining the bar association and we are inclusive, [Standard] said 'yes, it's important. But we have to ... reach out to them.'"
