Jeffrey Landes Quoted in Financial Times on Employment Law Guidelines for Hiring Nannies

Jeffrey Landes, a member of the firm in the Labor and Employment practice in the New York office, was quoted by the Financial Times in an article on employment law issues in hiring nannies.

The article, "When Top Guns Fall Foul of the Nanny Wars," published on 1/11/07, discussed the dangers of hiring a nanny, which can be a legal minefield. Although nannies in most areas have no legal rights against discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, they increasingly think they do - and in the US legal system, that is half the battle.

Landes, an employment law attorney at law firm Epstein Becker & Green, said it is not a good idea to ask about race, national origin, or other potentially sensitive issues when interviewing a nanny. Whatever the law says, "as a practical matter, somebody could still file a claim and the last thing anyone needs as a working parent is another thing to worry about, even to oppose a ridiculous claim."
