For those who might have to go to trial in an unfamiliar forum before an unfamiliar judge, there’s some homework they need to do in order to excel at trial.

That involves getting to know the court clerk and personnel, because they could help a visiting attorney with understanding the nuances of the judge. For example, Iannaccone says, an attorney could ask about how the judge likes to treat objections, or how he or she likes to deal with exhibits, among other things.

“Befriending and developing a relationship [with court staff] can be an extremely valuable asset to you,” Iannaccone said.
