Epstein Becker Green’s Karl C. Riehl Elected President of the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York

New York (Feb. 05, 2013) — Karl C. Riehl, Legal Recruitment and Professional Development Manager with Epstein Becker Green, has been elected President of LeGaL, the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York. The organization, which was one of the first bar associations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) legal community in the country, remains one of the largest and most active of its kind.

A graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law and former adjunct professor at Seton Hall University, Riehl is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources and manages the legal recruitment and professional development for the firm's New York office.

"It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead an organization that has played such a vital role in promoting the interests of the LGBT legal community and in the greater effort to ensure equal rights for the LGBT community," said Riehl. "I am excited to be serving in this new role and look forward to continuing and expanding on the amazing work LeGaL has been doing for the past thirty-five years."

Riehl, a New Jersey resident, was also recently appointed to the Essex County, NJ LGBTQ Advisory Board, which promotes the well-being of the county's LBGTQ citizenry through advocacy, policy advisement, and community outreach. Additionally, he currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the New Jersey Law & Education Empowerment Project (NJ LEEP), a community-based diversity pipeline program in Newark, N.J. that empowers urban youth from underserved neighborhoods to perform at high academic levels by building skills through law-related and other educational programs, developing habits necessary for lasting success and community leadership, and offering exposure to role models who have achieved academic and professional success.

Serving the New York metropolitan area, LeGaL is dedicated to improving the administration of the law, ensuring full equality for members of the LGBT community, and promoting the expertise and advancement of LGBT legal professionals.

Through the LeGaL Foundation, the organization publishes Lesbian/Gay Law Notes, the most comprehensive monthly publication summarizing legal and legislative developments affecting the LGBT community here and abroad, conducts various clinics, including a weekly walk-in pro bono clinic at Manhattan's LGBT Community Center serving hundreds of individuals each year, a monthly clinic on Long Island, a twice-monthly clinic in Brooklyn, and a collaborative Life Planning Clinic with the New York Legal Assistant Group's LGBT Law Project, and sponsors the Dr. M.L. Hank Henry, Jr. Fund for Judicial Fellowships.

Among its many other activities, LeGaL runs the area's only career fair dedicated to first-year LGBT law students, as well as a mentoring program devoted to LGBT law students and recent graduates to help promote their professional development and to assist with traversing the unique challenges they may face.
